The Face of Literature

Boy are things changing. Asked someone the other day if they read any good books lately and they said "yes-I checked out 2 good audio books at the library and downloaded one from the internet." Uh - what happened to the leather bound and paperback books we used to see everywhere? The face of literature is really changing for sure. I love a good book to read. It keeps my mind sharp and my brain alive and my imagination flowing. Audio books seem like a tranquilizer to me-they knock me out in the first chapter. Or the voice irratates me and I can't concentrate on the book. Guess I'm weird. Knowledge is power-and the gateway to knowledge is books. Just like blogging is changing the journalistic field, technology is changing the face of literature again. The history of our world has been recorded by writing it in books for others to read. When you read something-it tends to stay in your mind better than when you listen to someone else say it. I don't know - I hope technology doesn't eventually make our brains lazy.

Words of Wisdom
Put your best foot forward-just try not to step in any thing!

It was nice chatting with you , Tom , today. I enjoyed it. And everyone enjoyed the ice cream.

Books? One of my loves!
I'm like you in some ways, Robert - I love to read a good book and even though I work full time I still manage to read 4-8 books a month. I've never "listened" to a book, but I think they have their place in today's society. There are so many people who spend hours on the road and they can use that time enjoying their book. Of course I would hope they don't get so engrossed in the book that they don't see me in the other lane!

Will technology eventually make our brains lazy? I think in some ways maybe - but in most ways I think technology strengthens our brains. I am finding that especially true in the "senior" generation. I know so many people who are in the 70's and 80's and are using a computer for the first time in their life. And they are continuing to learn.

Back to books, you can check out our bookclub's website at: GRINS

I never understood the phrase audio book. You read a book. Listening to someone else is called a narration. I guess I am just old fashioned too, as much as I hate to admit it.

Though I'm in "the computer biz" I still prefer paper to the screen when it comes to getting my news or reading anything that I have to concentrate on. Something about paper makes feel the need to read to the end.
